Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices #1) by Cassandra Clare

In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

Cassandra Clare knocks it out of the park with her latest Shadowhunter spinoff series, The Dark Artifices. This series is centered around the Los Angeles Institute and the two young Shadowhunters, Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn, that were introduced to us at the end of the Mortal Instruments series. Book one in the series, Lady Midnight, is full of everything that makes Clare’s novels special - adventure, lovable characters, mystery, magic, drama, and a little bit of romance. We even get to check in with some old friends from the previous series, which I loved. I felt like these characters, perhaps because they have already experienced such adversity, added a new level of maturity to the story which helps set this series apart from the others. I’m excited to see where Clare takes the story from here. Can’t wait for the next one!

2016 Reading Challenge: A book that's more than 600 pages

The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare

Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices can get to know warlock Magnus Bane like never before in this collection of New York Times bestselling tales, in print for the first time with an exclusive new story and illustrated material.

This collection of eleven short stories illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality, flamboyant style, and sharp wit populate the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

Originally released one-by-one as e-only short stories by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan, this compilation presents all ten together in print for the first time and includes a never-before-seen eleventh tale, as well as new illustrated material.

After reading this book, I happened to take a glance at some of the other reviews, and for some reason, there seems to be a lot of hate surrounding this book. I always loved Magnus Bane as a character. I appreciated his sense of humor, style, and willingness to be himself. I was excited when I heard that Cassandra would be releasing a series of shorts about his back story, which was largely a mystery. I found the shorts to be everything that Magnus's character is - funny, daring, and full of heart. I would recommend reading Cassandra's other published works before picking this one up, as there is crossover with story lines and characters.

I don't think these stories really reveal anything new about Magnus's character, but if you are a fan Cassandra's other series and of Magnus as a character, then these shorts are a fun little diversion into the warlock's world. I liked the artwork included with the shorts, and I thought that Cassandra's writing was as good as ever. I'm not sure where all the hate is coming from, but like I said, if you are a fan of Magnus's then I think that you will enjoy this collection.

The Shadowhunter's Codex by Cassandra Clare and Joshua Lewis

The Clave is pleased to announce the newest edition of the Nephilim’s oldest and most famous training manual: the Shadowhunter’s Codex. Since the thirteenth century, the Codex has been the young Shadowhunter’s best friend. When you’re being swarmed by demons it can be easy to forget the finer points of obscure demon languages or the fastest way to stop an attack of Raum demons. With the Codex by your side, you never have to worry.

Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the Codex covers it all: the history and the laws of our world; how to identify, interact with, and if necessary, kill that world’s many colorful denizens; which end of the stele is the end you write with. No more will your attempt to fight off rogue vampires and warlocks be slowed by the need to answer endless questions from your new recruits: What is a Pyxis? Why don’t we use guns? If I can’t see a warlock’s mark, is there a polite way to ask him where it is? Where do we get all our holy water? Geography, History, Magic, and Zoology textbook all rolled into one, the Codex is here to help new Shadowhunters navigate the beautiful, often brutal world that we inhabit.

Do not let it be said that the Clave is outdated or, as the younger Shadowhunters say, “uncool”: this new edition of the Codex will be available not only in the usual magically-sealed demonskin binding, but also in a smart, modern edition using all of today’s most exciting printing techniques, including such new features as a sturdy clothbound cover, a protective dust jacket, and information about title, author, publisher, and so on conveniently available right on the cover. You’ll be pleased to know that it fits neatly into most satchels, and unlike previous editions, it rarely sets off alarm wards.

The old woodcuts and engravings have been replaced as well: instead, you’ll find lavish modern illustrations by some of the brightest luminaries of the fantastic. Creatures, weapons, people, and places have been carefully and accurately rendered by the likes of Rebecca Guay, Charles Vess, Jim Nelson, Theo Black, Elisabeth Alba, and Cassandra Jean. Chapters are beautifully introduced by the drawings of Michael Kaluta, and along with our condensation of the classic 2,450-page tome, A History of the Nephilim, you will find a selection of the best of the lovely illustrations of that volume by John Dollar.

This is a fun little extension of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments Series. The book contains drawings done by Clary and a scattering of “handwritten” notes written by Clary, Jace, and Simon throughout the pages, which add a little humor to the reading experience. It is not an essential read to understanding the series, but it does provide some more background information and history behind the Shadowhunter world that fans of the series will enjoy.

City of Heavenly Fire (The Mortal Instruments #6) by Cassandra Clare

Sebastian Morgenstern’s final message to the Shadowhunters: “ΕRCHOMAI. I am coming.”

The Shadowhunters have never faced an evil like Sebastian Morgenstern, and Clary is determined to find a way to defeat her brother, but no one could imagine the horrors Sebastian planned to unleash on the Shadowhunters. Using the Infernal Cup, Sebastian is creating a new army of Shadowhunters, by turning them into the Endarkened. Converted into something dark and evil, there is no saving a Shadowhunter who becomes an Endarkened, and families, lovers, and parabati are torn apart.

With Institutes under attack all over the world, the Shadowhunters withdrawn to Idris, leaving the world largely unprotected. But even the wards surrounding Idris can keep Sebastian at bay. No weapon from this world can defeat him, and when the Nephilim discover they have been betrayed by their Downworlder allies, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec, are forced to travel to a demon realm in the hopes of finding a way to defeat Sebastian.

The fate of the world rests in the hands of Clary. In this final installment, lives will be lost, sacrifices will be made, and the fate of the world will be decided.

Cassandra Clare is one of the finest YA writers out there. Her books have a sophistication and an intelligence about them that make them truly unique. She is an amazing writer and every time I open one of her books, I find myself in awe of her talent. Her stories are complex and involve multiple characters and worlds, but she weaves them together seamlessly and in a way that keeps you turning page after page. The nerd in me loves how she integrates allusions to the Bible and myths, Latin, and other literary works. Her books are imaginative, without being cliche or hokey, and her ability to sustain this level of excellence throughout a long running series is impressive.

It is always a bittersweet thing when a series comes to an end. On one hand, I am dying to know what happens and how the series will come together in the end. On the other hand, I am hesitant to say goodbye to a story and characters that I have invested so much in. It’s like getting ready to say goodbye to a friend. And of course, you can always reread a series, but you will never again have the chance to experience the books for the first time again. As a quintessential book nerd, I have lived this experience over and over again. Sometimes I think I’m a glutton for punishment, but I can’t seem to help myself. The ending of this series is definitely a bittersweet one.

I have absolutely no complaints about the ending of this series. I was thrilled when it showed up in the mail and I saw that it was over 700 pages. Nothing bothers me more when the the final book in a series is rushed or too short. While fast paced, nothing about this book was rushed. It had everything you would expect - action, romance, tragedy, and plenty of plot twists. In fact, had the final twist not worked out the way it did, this would have been a very different review. I don’t want to give anything away, but let’s just say that there was a situation involving Simon that would have ruined the entire book for me had Cassandra not resolved it like she did. In the end, I was very pleased with how everything played out.

The good thing is that we will not have to say goodbye to the Shadowhunter world any time soon. Even though the production was delayed, a movie adaptation of City of Ashes is still in the works. No information on an expected release date, but as of now, we can still expect to see the second installment of The Mortal Instruments hit the big screen.

The best news, however, is that Cassandra will be releasing a new series! This will be a spinoff of The Mortal Instruments, and the new series will feature some of the characters introduced in City of Heavenly Fire. It appears that there will be three books in The Dark Artifices Series, and based on the story that was set up in City of Heavenly Fire, it promises to be another amazing read. It looks like we should expect the first book, Lady Midnight, in the Spring of 2015.

The Mortal Instruments Series (Books IV & V) by Cassandra Clare

Book IV: City of Fallen Angels
Now that the Mortal War is over, Clary returns to her life in New York and all the new possibilities before her. Her mother and Luke are engaged. She is training to be a Shadowhunter and use her new found power. The accords have brought peace to the Shadowhunters and Downworlders. Most importantly, she is free to be with her one true love, Jace.

Her moment of peace seems fleeting as once again strange things begin to happen around her. The bodies of Shadowhunters are turning up in Downwolder territories, threatening the fragile peace between races. Simon is facing his own challenges when his mother discovers that he is a vampire and his love life becomes a little complicated. Worst of all, Jace begins to pull away from her without explanation.

As Clary searches for answers for all mysterious happenings, she discovers that she is the one who set these terrible events in motion. Choices have consequences, and Clary finds herself facing the ultimate consequence of her choice - the loss of those most dear to her.

I love Cassandra Clare's writing. The worlds that she creates are so entrancing, but what I love the most are her characters. The relationships she creates between her characters makes them so special, so endearing, that you become lost in their stories. When I pick up one of Cassandra's books, I get so lost in them that hours can go by in the blink of an eye. I have to admit, I had a hard time getting into this book at first. Not because there is anything wrong with the book, in fact, it is just as well written as all the others, but because I knew that Clary and Jace's happy ending was fleeting and I was reluctant to watch it fall apart. Of course, I wasn't expecting what happened at all. Cassandra has an amazing ability to fool her readers, but in a good way. Just when I think I know where the story is going, it veers off in a direction I never saw coming. It makes for fantastic storytelling and only makes it easier to get lost in her words. Of course, it won't be a Cassandra Clare novel without a torturous cliffhanger, and while this one isn't torturous, it certainly is ominous.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book V: City of Lost Souls
When Jace goes missing, Clary must ask herself what she is willing to do to find him. The Clave's mission is to track down Sebastian and destroy him, but destroying him would mean destroying Jace. Jace and Sebastian are now linked by Lilith's magic. What happens to one, happens to the other.
Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle search for a way to kill Sebastian without harming Jace, seeking answers from anyone - evil and good alike. Meanwhile, Clary follows Jace and Sebastian into an unknown dimension, hoping to protect Jace while discovering Sebastian's plan. Clary quickly realizes that the Jace in front of her, while appearing to be the one she loves, is not entirely himself. She will have to walk a fine line as she tries to get Sebastian to trust her enough to reveal his plans.
What she will discover is that Sebastian plans to burn the world to the ground. A war is coming. He is raising an army of dark Shadowhunters. The fate of Jace's soul is not the only thing on the line. The fate of the Shadowhunters, the fate of the whole world, hangs in the balance...
WOW! That's all I can say after finishing this book. What an ending! Bittersweet. That is how I would describe it. While there are pockets of happiness, there are far more loose ends and uncertainty. I cannot wait for the last book in this series. If we are to judge what is to come by this book, then we are all in store for an epic, apocalyptic ending to this series. I have no doubt that Cassandra will be able to deliver an ending to this series that will meet every one of (and probably exceed) my expectations.
She is amazing and I am in awe of her talent. I know I have said it before, but her ability to create these worlds and characters is just amazing. I love them all. I get so lost in their stories. The journey (emotional and otherwise) that Cassandra's writing takes me on is the perfect escape from reality. As a reader, this is what I ask of an author. To create a world where I can get lost, that transports me to another time and place. It is true that a reader lives a thousand lives within the pages of books, and this is the perfect description of what it is like to experience a Cassandra Clare novel.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones the Movie
So let me start by saying that I am not a movie critic, but I was so excited to see this movie that I just had to share my thoughts. I will admit that while I was super excited, I was also nervous as I always am when they make one of my favorite books into a movie. I'm always afraid that they will change too much or that they won't cast the right people and the image that I created in my head won't be what I see on the screen. The movie always falls short in some way, which I think is inevitable when you translate a book onto the screen. Reading is such an incredibly intimate thing. When you read a book, it's your imagination that is creating the images in your head and because we don't all see things the same way, it is natural for some disappointments.
I was worried about how they would handle the whole "brother thing" in the movie. It is such a pivotal plot point (how's that for alliteration!) in the book that it can't really be ignored, but I was worried about how people who hadn't read the books would respond to it. Americans are notorious for loving and demanding happily-ever-afters in our movies, and I worried that people would be turned off by this aspect of the film. I mean, I found myself trying to justify insest while I was reading the books! I feel that they handled it well in the movie, but it's the one thing that really bothered me.
In the book you have no idea that Jace isn't really Clary's brother. In fact, you don't find out until book three that he isn't, but in the meantime you are subjected to this torment of emotion because you believe it's true just like Jace and Clary. These two characters love each other, but can't be together because the obstacle keeping them apart is largely insurmountable, and it rips your heart to pieces to watch them both suffer.Part of this element is missing from the film because it is made clear to the audience that while Jace and Clary think that they are siblings, it is not in fact true. I can understand why they made this change, but for me it removes some of the angst. However, I do feel that Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins are strong enough actors to pull off the emotion.
Overall, I was very pleased with the film. The cast was fantastic, the sets were amazing, there was plenty of action, and I liked the comedic element to the film. It was darker than I thought it would be and I think this added a new layer of drama which I loved. I heard that the sequel is already in the works and I'm excited to see what's next. If you are a fan of the franchise, I don't think that you will be disappointed by this film. It was very faithful to the books, which probably had a lot to do with the fact that Cassandra Clare was so involved with the project and had a director that was mindful of and respectful to the fanbase. Now I just have to find someone to go see it with me again :)
