The History of the Snowman by Bob Eckstein

The snowman is perhaps one of the most endearing symbols of the holiday season. Often referred to as the "King of Kitch," one can find the image of the snowman plastered on anything from snow globes to sweaters, and everything in between. I have to admit that I have never once thought about where the snowman came from. He has always been one of those icons that has always been there in the background.

Like so many before me, I too can remember making snowmen on those glorious days when the snow would free us from the inside of the schoolroom. Perhaps it is because the snowman is such a nonthreatening image, that I have never given a thought as to it's origins.

In his book, Bob Eckstein traces the history of the snowman through the various mediums - art, music, advertising, books, etc - in which the snowman has appeared, resulting in a humorous narrative full of some surprising findings. This is a fun and enjoyable holiday read.
